Micaela is in her second last year of high school and so kindly agreed to be my first high school senior model for 2018! It was so fun shooting with her around Mooloolaba. After our shoot, I got Micaela to answer some questions so that we could get a little insight into her life as a high school senior.
1. If you could plan a school trip anywhere for next year, where would you want to go?
Micaela: I would plan a trip to the Maldives. One of the reasons for this, being that I study biology at school and this is one of my favourite subjects. I feel as though going to the Maldives I would able to explore areas of biology due to all of the marine life, and it would also be an amazing experience given the picturesque scenery in the Maldives.
2. Which TV show is most talked about at school at the moment?
Micaela: At the moment there isn’t really any specific show that is heavily talked about, but when it came out (last year) the show ’13 Reasons Why’ was talked about a lot in school, mainly because of its controversial topic.
3. If you were in charge of planning a concert for the school, which three artists would you invite?
Micaela: I would invite Skegss because they are an extremely popular band for my age group. I would also bring Gang of Youths and Blink-182 because they are two bands that I, and many other students in my grade listen to.
4. What are you looking most forward to in year 12 next year?
Micaela: I am most looking forward to formal. My school’s formal is held in May and I cannot wait! I love getting dressed up and I’m so excited to see everybody in formal wear with big smiles on their faces. I think it will a great night, and definitely, one to remember.
5. Do you want to go to university and what would you like to study?
Micaela: Yes, at the moment I am looking to go to university. Ever since I was little, I have always wanted to study medicine. Lately, I have been thinking about possibly studying gynaecology/obstetrics, but I am also considering different pathways such as criminal psychology or a senior maths, biology and Japanese teacher. I am still yet to decide but thankfully I still have a while to make my mind up.
6. What are some things you like to do to have fun?
Micaela: To have fun, I usually go down to the beach with my boyfriend, family or friends. Most often I will go to Mooloolaba beach as it is central to most things, such as my work. I work in a Café on the Mooloolaba Esplanade, which takes up quite a lot of my spare time, but, I love where I work so that makes my shifts there go quickly and enjoyable. I also play the guitar when I have some spare time. I have been playing quite a lot since 2016, when I stopped playing violin after 9 years and decided I needed a change. I fell in love with the instrument and the sound it is able to make, and have been playing ever since.
7. Are there any school events coming up that you are planning to attend?
Micaela: I am going on a school trip to Japan in September for two weeks. I study Japanese as a subject so this is an amazing opportunity for me to be able to widen my vocabulary and be surrounded by the culture which I am being taught about.
8. Are you interested in travel? Which countries are you dying to visit? And why?
Micaela: Travelling is something that I have always been interested in. I have recently decided that I want to take a gap year when I graduate and travel the world. A place which I have my heart set on visiting is Europe. On my gap year, I hope to travel all over Europe. I also want to go back to South Africa as I was born there and I would love to see my family.
9. When did you get into cheerleading? And what do you love most about it?
Micaela: I began cheerleading in 2014, starting out on my school cheer team. I stayed on that team for 2 years before also joining a second club team, called MDC. In 2017 I was captain of cheerleading at my school and was involved in a cheer team, a pom team for my school, and a higher level cheer team and group stunt routine for my club. I fell involve with cheer the second I started but sadly had to give it up at the end of 2017 for personal reasons.
One of my favourite memories from cheer was my first competition of 2017 with my club (MDC). The competition was a small comp, called Winterfest. At this competition we gave it our all and ended up coming first in our division, becoming grand champions of our level, winning a bid to compete in Hawaii (which we did not end up pursuing), and getting a bid to a competition called Pinnacle - a bid only event held in Melbourne. I think this would’ve been my proudest moment for my team, and being able to make my coaches proud was the best reward I could’ve asked for.
I loved the fact that cheerleading gave me a second family. Because the sport requires so much trust you become so close with everyone, and eventually resemble a close little family. I still keep in touch with the girls that I used to cheer with, and we are still as close as ever. Doing cheerleading was definitely one of the best things I could’ve possibly done for myself, and I’m so glad that I did it.
9. What's your favourite song at this very moment in time?
Micaela: Tungs by The Frights
Thanks Micaela for taking the time to share with us a little a bit about yourself! You're such a talented young lady and have a great future ahead of you.
